WHAT IS AN ICE DAM?

Ineffective insulation allows the home to lose heat. It rises into the attic. That heat escapes through the roof and causes the bottom of the snow blanket to melt. The melted snow trickles down the roof but refreezes when it reaches the unheated eaves, causing a blockage. The melted snow starts to back-up. It seeps under the shingles and drips down into the attic, ruining any blown in insulation. In extreme cases, it can drip down into the home causing damage to walls, sheetrock and paint.
